Tenure Track Position as Associate Senior Lecturer in Theoretical Physics

Duties: The position includes teaching, research and administration. Teaching duties include course responsibility, course administration and supervision of second- and third-cycle students. The holder shall also keep abreast of developments within the subject area and the developments in wider community that are significant for the work at the university. A position as associate senior lecturer is intended to qualify the holder for a teaching position with higher qualification requirements.
The research is within the general topics of string theory, gravitation and quantum field theory. Candidates whose research is in the modern areas of string theory, related to holographic dualities, black hole physics, quantum entanglement and conformal bootstrap, are especially encouraged to apply. During the employment period, the position is research focused, and include 80% research and 20% teaching. During this time, the employment is split equally between Nordita, Nordic Institute for Theoretical Physics, in Stockholm and Uppsala University.
At Nordita, the main responsibilities include research, supervision of postdocs and doctoral students, and to actively participate in organizing scientific programs and workshops. At Uppsala University the duties include research, teaching and administration.
Appointment Period: The position can be held for a maximum of four years. An associate senior lecturer can apply for promotion to senior lecturer. If the associate senior lecturer is deemed suitable and fulfills the criteria for promotion established by the Faculty Board, he/she shall be promoted to and employed as senior lecturer.
Qualifications Required: According to the Swedish Higher Education Ordinance those qualified for appointment as associate senior lecturer are persons who have obtained a doctoral degree or achieved the equivalent competence. Applicants who have obtained a doctoral degree or achieved the equivalent competence in seven years or less prior to the end of the application period will be given priority.
According to Uppsala University´s appointments regulations, teaching expertise is an eligibility requirement for appointment as an associate senior lecturer. To obtain teaching expertise, the applicant should have participated in teacher training for higher education of relevance to operations at the University, comprising at least five weeks, or be considered to have acquired the equivalent competence. If it has not been possible to acquire this qualification prior to employment, qualifying training for teachers in higher education shall be completed during the first two years of employment.
A general eligibility requirement is that the applicant must possess the personal capabilities necessary to carry out fully the duties of the appointment.
Documented ability to teach in Swedish and/or English is a requirement unless special reasons prevail. The holder is expected to be able to teach in Swedish within two years.
Research Expertise and Teaching Expertise: The ranking of eligible applicants will be based primarily on research and teaching expertise, which will be given equal weight. Research expertise comprises research merits as well as the applicant´s potential to contribute to the future development of both research and teaching. In assessing research expertise special weight will be attached to research merits in theoretical high-energy physics, such as string theory, mathematical physics, phenomenological particle physics and cosmology.
As much attention shall be given to the assessment of teaching expertise as to the assessment of research expertise. Teaching expertise comprises educational and teaching qualifications. In assessing teaching expertise teaching quality must be the prime consideration. The scope of teaching experience, in terms of both breadth and depth, must also be afforded consideration. In assessing teaching expertise special weight will be attached to merits in planning and executing teaching tasks, as well as skill at supervising. The teaching experience and skill must be well documented so that the quality can be assessed.
Administrative Expertise Administrative expertise is important for the employment and will be afforded consideration/be afforded high consideration. Administrative expertise also includes entrepreneurship.
The candidates ability to cooperate both within the academic world and with society, and to inform the public about science and research, and to which degree he or she possesses administrative expertise, is also important.
Administrative expertise is demonstrated through skills in general operative planning, ability to organize and direct personnel, and ability to cooperate. Skill in informing the public about science is demonstrated through popular science activities, such as the publishing of popular science articles and taking part in the public debate about science and education.
All merits must be documented in a manner that makes it possible to assess both quality and scope.
