The solar wind is the continuous stream of plasma that expands into interplanetary space, carrying with it the stellar magnetic field and eventually impacting on and affecting all objects in the solar system. In this lecture we’ll start by describing the essential structure of the atmosphere of the Sun. Following this, we will apply basic fluid mechanics to develop a simplified model of the outer reaches of the Sun’s atmosphere, showing how this leads to the formation of the solar wind, and examine its variation in velocity as it expands out into space, comparing these predictions with observations made by spacecraft.

The lecture is an obligatory teaching test for those applying for admittance as docent and it should be possible for students and others with basic academic education in the relevant field to follow it. The lecture will last for 40-45 minutes and afterwards the audience may ask questions. The lecture will be given in English.
