Overview of energetic particle studies based on neutron measurements in the Large Helical Device (LHD).
Understanding of energetic particle confinement in stellarator/helical systems has been greatly enhanced by the deuterium operation at the LHD, which began in March 2017. Neutron diagnostics, such as a neutron flux monitor, neutron activation system, vertical neutron cameras, neutron fluctuation detector, and scintillating-fiber detector have been installed for the deuterium operation at the LHD, as powerful tools for elucidating the behavior of confined energetic ions because neutrons created in the neutral beam-heated deuterium plasma at the LHD primarily arise from the so-called beam–thermal reaction. Comprehensive neutron diagnostics as well as recent results of energetic particle confinement study will be presented.
