Combinatorial design of soft magnetic metallic glasses

Soft magnetic materials play an important role in energy conversion. Minimising the energy losses from hysteresis effects is critical for high energy efficiency of their applications. Amorphous metal alloys (metallic glasses) have shown potential as soft magnetic materials, with high magnetic saturation and low coercivity. However, the production of these materials demand very high quenching rates, which limits the production with conventional methods to thin sheets.

The purpose of this project is to develop soft magnetic metallic glasses in bulk form. The challenge is to find compositions for optimal glass forming ability as well as excellent soft magnetic properties. Combinatorial Sputtering and Additive Manufacturing (3D-printing) are the main methods that will be used to synthesise these materials. Combinatorial Sputtering of thin films is a time and material efficient technique that can cover a range of compositions in a single sample and thus give a quick overlook how physical properties vary with chemical composition. Additive Manufacturing can then be used in the next step as a production method with high quenching rates, compared to conventional methods, for production of bulk materials.
